Beard/Mustache Hair Transplant

Beard and Mustache is iconic of masculinity, but uneven facial hair due to aging or having genetically thin, asymmetric beard hair lines leaves lesser options for men than just going for clean shave. Patchy and thinning beard and mustache can be restored with facial hair transplant procedure, that cannot just give you thicker goatee and mustache but also include sideburns and cheeks, as in a total replenish of facial hair. This procedure is also useful for camouflaging acne scars or any other scars from cuts, burns, rashes etc.

Facial Hair Transplant procedure is performed with sophisticated follicular grafting techniques that give you minor spot coverage to the mustache or full facial hair coverage all with a natural fullness of hair density.

Hair Grafts for Facial Hair

Hair grafts taken from the back of the scalp and above the ear mostly with FUE technique, sometimes body hair can be used as well with BHFUE technology. It takes from 250—500 hair grafts for various coverage patterns in the goatee, and up to 800 hair grafts for a full beard restoration including the sideburns and both cheeks. The hair grafts differ from that of scalp that consist of 2-5 hairs each graft, but one 1-3hair grafts are ideally created to resemble natural beard and mustache hairs. The transplanted facial hairs will resume normal growth that can be shaved and groomed normally as well.

FUE and BHFUE technique is the predominantly used procedure in Harley Street Hair Transplant Clinic, whereas, for agreeing patients, FUT is also used, using a very short fragment of skin taken from the back of the scalp. However, as the texture of the hair at the sides of the scalp and immediately above the ears suit the texture of the hair better than the back of the scalp, the follicular extraction is easier than the strip excision from such donor areas.

The transplanted grafts cannot be relocated back to the scalp to for future scalp hair restoration, since male pattern baldness is a very common concern. Hence, it is a fair intention to leave the donor reserve for future scalp hair restoration as much as possible, and using body hairs instead, that can also be a viable match for beard and mustache. With Body Hair Follicular Unit Extraction, or BHFUE, 1-2hair grafts are extracted from hair bearing areas of the patient’s body other than the scalp, including, arms, legs, chest and armpits.

Beard and Mustache Hair Restoration is an outpatient procedure that span 2-5 hours depending on the extent of the hair grafts needed.

This procedure is quite flexible of candidacy strictness and pre-operative measures, whereas, the patient must refrain from smoking and certain drugs, including aspirins and any anti-inflammatory drugs up till a certain time before and after the procedure. This will be discussed at the consultation session.

The surgeon extracts the donor hairs, from the scalp or body hair as predetermined. In case of the scalp, the areas above the ears at the side of the scalp is shaved and with specially designed FUE instruments 2-3 follicular units are selected and plucked off with a thin fatty tissue of the dermis. The same is performed with chest, leg or arm or armpit hairs, wherein the donor area are shaved and hair grafts are plucked off.

The extracted hairs are further dissected under a microscope, to divide according to required graft numbers and placed onto a holding solution.

The placement of the hair grafts is done according to exact direction and angles of original hair patterns. Factors like grey hair and hair textures are placed accordingly, matching up to create most natural aesthetics.

Immediately after the surgery, the recipient zone would have tiny specs of scars that would take the time of up to 5 days to heal off completely, as much time it takes to heal a small scratch. For the initial 2-3 days after the surgery the patients are required to not touch their transplanted area, or let it rub against sheets and pillows while sleeping. The patient is advised to avoid direct sun exposure until the scars heal off completely and the hair growth starts.

The results are expected to emerge within 5months. Sometimes, the patient might need an additional touch up session, in case they need more thickness, or loss of hair grafts.
