Hair Transplant

Hair Transplant surgery is devised for partially bald or thinned hair lines by extracting badness resistant hair follicles from the back of the scalp and above the ears that is referred as the donor site; and implant these hair follicles to the baldness affected areas referred as the recipient site.

Each hair strand grows from a hair follicle that looks much like a bulb of a sapling that carries life to the hair strands and a hair transplant surgery works with hair follicles rather than the strands of hair. Scalp hair follicles grow in closely pact groups of 2, 3, 4 and 5 hairs that is called hair follicular units and the modern hair restoration methods work with the hair follicular units wherein they are identified, selected and dissected under specialized tools following two methods:

  • Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) that is done by surgically removing a strip of skin from the donor zone / back of the scalp containing numerous healthy follicular units that is dissected under a stereo microscope from the skin and implanted to the recipient area.
  • Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) that is done by extracting each follicular unit one at a time, directly from the donor site and implanting them to the recipient area.
  • Hair Loss leading to baldness is usually male pattern baldness or androgenic alopecia which a genetically inherited syndrome of androgenic reactions that makes baldness in men very common, whereas, women can also be affected by the same, referred as female pattern hair loss but less commonly and baldness in women due to androgenic reactions is rather rare.

Androgenic Alopecia generally follows a certain pattern of hair loss, at the end of which leaves a varying density of hair at the back of the scalp which is resistant to the androgenic affect and serves as the donor hair for a hair transplant surgery, and it is upon the density and quality of the donor hair that determines the whole surgery.

As medications and other hair loss treatments might be effective slowing it down, there is no therapeutic which can actually stop genetically prone hair loss. And the best time to consider a hair restoration / hair transplant surgery would be when all other treatments have been used and exhausted and only when the hair loss stabilizes.

Ideal Candidacy and Indications

Ideal candidates must be at the conclusive or stabilized stage of their hair loss because a hair restoration surgery can only work with genetically immune hair follicles and distribute it in the scalp for an ultimate coverage, and not prevent the hair loss that is genetically prone to lose.

A Hair Transplant surgery can only be conducted on those patients who happen to have sufficient donor hair to cover up the recipient area that will look natural. Hair Loss doesn’t really stop after a time, the right time to consider a hair restoration surgery when the hair loss has stabiles to long term or lifetime immunity to androgenic reactions.

The Procedure

The surgery is performed only on ideal candidates after a consultation session under the appointment with the hair transplant surgeon whom the patient has elected. The consultation session takes place at Harley Hair Transplant Clinic London, where the surgeon will examine the patient and determine the surgery based on the following notes:

  • Causes of the patient’s Hair Loss
  • Prediction of further hair loss
  • Donor Dominance
  • Condition of donor density
  • Scalp Elasticity
  • Condition of recipient area
  • Choice and candidacy of procedures: FUT or FUE

Hair transplant surgery is only complete with proper maintenance of pre-op and post-op instructions. Once the candidacy is determined, patients are given pre-operational instructions at least 2weeks prior to surgery that must be followed religiously for safety and avoiding any risks like infection, and damage of hair follicles.

The surgery takes place at morning or afternoon shifts with proper pre-op preparation that includes, refraining from smoking, lifestyle drugs, alcohol from at least 7 days to surgery and no coffee on the day of the surgery.

Follicular Unit Transplant / FUT – Local anaesthetics are injected to the scalp and when the scalp is prepared, a strip of skin containing millions of hair follicles is excised off the sides and back of the scalp under one linear incision with the use of a scalpel, the wound is sutured that will leave a temporary scar. The skin strip is taken under a stereo microscope to be dissected into 2, 3, 4, 5 follicular units bound into grafts and transplant the grafts into the recipient area. The linear scar would be covered in the layers of hair.

Follicular Unit Extraction / FUE – No skin excision is involved instead the surgeon will directly pluck each hair from the donor site individually and plant them to the recipient area individually. FUE hair transplantation is a time consuming long procedure that might require more sessions to achieve the predetermined transplantation. But it also allows minimal scarring and quick healing and the technique can also extract androgen immune donor hair from other hair baring areas than the scalp like beard, arms and legs with BHT or BHFUE. FUE hair transplant is also used for eyebrow hair transplant and is most efficient for smaller and/or diffusive recipient areas.

Eyebrow Hair Transplant – There is an extensive list of patients at Harley Hair Transplant Clinic London who wish to opt for an eyebrow hair restoration to enhance their eye line that’s the focal point of the face. Eyebrow hair restoration might apply for clients who have a scar, or thin barely-there eyebrows rooting from a number of causes. It’s done with micro-grafting technique and little amount of donor hair suffice for a predictable and permanent result as desired.

Special Cases – Special cases are regarded to all hair restoration procedures that are not the usual Androgenic Alopecia/ pattern baldness. Special cases at Harley Hair Transplant Clinic include cases of repairing of outdated hair transplantation, scar fixing, traction alopecia, and other non-androgenic hair loss syndromes.

Recovery and Final Results

After the surgery the patient is given a set of post-op instructions from Harley Hair Transplant Clinic London to follow which includes sleeping in a sitting position and keeping the head up for first or 3 consecutive nights.

The recovery process differs from patient to patient. Pain, bleeding, swelling and discomfort in the scalp and forehead at the first night might be felt once the anaesthesia completely wears off, this is normal to some extent that will last 2-3days and pain killers and respective therapeutics are prescribed for the patient to use if required. All discomfort will supposedly stop within a couple of days. And complete recovery from the wounds and suture scars shall take a month. Final results emerge instantly that will take about a year to come to a conclusive result.

Patients must feel free to anytime and as many times call at Harley Hair Transplant Clinic for all sorts of help and assistance.
